Prof. Anupam Sengupta will head the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) of the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ for a two-year mandate, renewable once, starting 1 October 2026. The IAS is at the forefront of innovation by supporting interdisciplinary and audacious research of both young and established researchers.

Prof. Sengupta is a Professor of Biological Physics at the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine, an ERC Consolidator Awardee and an FNR-ATTRACT Fellow. His research links physics and engineering with ecology, to better understand emergent behaviours in living and active matter. Combining experimental and theoretical approaches to address fundamental questions in ecology and human health, he leverages scientific discoveries made in his lab to fight cancer and develop sustainable bio-based solutions for a carbon-neutral future.

Prof. Sengupta succeeds to Prof. Claus Vögele, who was appointed as Head of the IAS in 2022. Since its foundation, the IAS has strengthened its support of scientific collaboration at all levels and across disciplines, with an ecosystem of dedicated funding instruments to explore bold and innovative ideas. In addition, the IAS organises regular, themed workshops with international speakers on emerging topics. 91¶ÌÊÓƵ sincerely thanks Professor Claus Vögele for his dedicated leadership, commitment and vision.

As part of his mandate, Professor Sengupta will lead the continued development of the IAS with Programme Manager Dr. Sylvie Fromentin, and serve as Chair of the IAS Scientific Council. He will also lead key IAS activities such as university community and outreach events, foster collaboration abroad with other IAS institutes, and secure additional external funding for novel IAS initiatives.
